The group of Prof. C.P. Müller at the Psychiatric and Psychotherapeutic University Hospital of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) is offering a doctoral position (PhD) with a thematic focus on the neurobiology of alcohol- and methamphetamine addiction. The project investigates the role of the Swiprosin-1/EFhd2 in resilience to drug addictionand will be performed in collaboration with PD Dr. D. Mielenz and Prof. C. Alzheimer. The goal of this project is to investigate the role of EFhd2 in the rewarding effects of alcohol and methamphetamine and compare them with its role in natural reinforcer processing in mice. We will identify the brain areas and pathways in which EFhd2 is causally active in these processes using mouse mutants and viral vector mediated gene rescue. Furthermore, it is the goal to understand the mechanisms by which EFhd2 controls the neurochemical and electrophysiological responses in the brain that are associated with acute and chronic drug exposure, as well as to understand the role of EFhd2 in chronic adaptations to alcohol and methamphetamine at the level of gene expression (RNA Seq). Our lab has profound expertise in neurochemical, behavioral, and molecular biological techniques related to drug addiction as well as a long history in research on the neurochemical mechanisms of drug effects. The project is funded by the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research (IZKF) of the FAU and offers a participation in the IZKF doctoral student academy with all its benefits. We are looking for an enthusiastic scientist with a background in molecular medicine, psychology, biology, or physiology who is interested in experimental work with mice. Experience in the analysis of mouse behavior is required. Applicants are invited to send a copy of their curriculum vitae, list of publications, a statement of research interests and a letter of recommendation by e-mail directly to C.P. Müller (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
